Here's some of our favourite 4WD spots in Queensland to give you inspiration for your next getaway.
1. Cape York, Far North QLD
Being one of Australia's toughest and most well known 4WD spots, we just had to recommend it at number one. There are several tracks to explore in the area, along with boundless road-trip routes to the location - all ranging in extremity. The experience is once in a life time and offers an extraordinary and Instagram-worthy adventure that's not for the weak. Beware - not everyone or every vehicle is built to handle Cape York - do thorough research before planning anything.
2. Moreton Island, Greater Brisbane
An awesome beach getaway near Brisbane, Moreton Island is a great spot for camping, fishing, 4WD and family fun. You can 4WD almost anywhere on the island, not just on main tracks, and there is always great views and activities to do. We love the authentic Australian beach experience here, and the opportunity to cruise at your own pace with your family.
3. Fraser Island, Fraser Coast
Similar to Moreton Island, Fraser Island is a great 4WD beach spot to take the kids. There are several spots here that are only accessible via 4WD which brings on mystery and adventure. Getting there from Brisbane is slightly harder than Moreton is, however in return, Fraser is the biggest sand island in the world, so it's worth the trek. There are also tons of great designated 4WD tracks here.
4. Janowen Hills 4WD Park, Southern QLD
Who doesn't love a dedicated 4WD park? Janowen Hills 4WD Park sells itself. Similar to Cambanoora Gorge, this park is located roughly 2 hours South-West of Brisbane, and contains roughly 80 tracks varying in difficulty. This is the perfect place to push your limits, gain some experience, and is worth looking up.
5. Cambanoora Gorge, Southern QLD
Cambanoora Gorge is a remarkable rainforest area with great opportunities for beginner 4WDers. Similar to Janowen Hills 4WD Park, this area is located roughly 2 hours South-West of Brisbane. The area includes 14 river crossings, making it the perfect adventure. We love this area due to the scenic views and Aussie feel, definitely worth the trip.
6. D'Aguilar National Park, Greater Brisbane
This National Park is close to Brisbane, and perfect for day trips or overnights. There are three popular forest drive tracks here, and are perfect for beginners and families as there is a variety of bushwalks, hiking tracks, lookouts, and swimming spots. This location may not be extreme, but it is very cruisy and scenic for a weekend trip.
Advice: Research all of these locations including their seclusion, difficulty and weather conditions before planning your next trip. The locations listed above are just some of Queensland's 4WD tracks that we think are worth checking out, and are recommended based on personal opinions, experiences, and research.
